“One Dream,

One cause,

One path,

One Run.

It’s Guwahati Half Marathon”

Origin of GHM

Guwahati Half Marathon was organized for the first time in August 2009 under the Social Initiatives Module of Techniche, the annual Techno-Management festival of IIT Guwahati. The event received a great response from the Guwahati populace, with over 1000 participants. The marathon continues to grow every year, with a new vision each year, including - “Run for prevention of child abuse”(in 2022), “Run for Digital India” (in 2018), “Run for Organ Donation — Live Life Give Life” (in 2017), “Run for Peace” (in 2015), “Run to affect the shift” (in 2014) and “Run for a better tomorrow” (in 2013) respectively.

Run for a cause

Kids are the future of society, and it’s our responsibility to keep them safe and secure and teach them to acquire a safe and correct path in their life. Nowadays, kids have very vast exposure to social media and the internet. They are trapped in various activities and get bullied many times or blackmailed.

Unfortunately, the world is not even sparing the kids. There is a high risk of kids getting distracted, especially the girls at a very high risk of getting prey in such traps. Due to COVID 19, the whole system has become online, and almost every child has gained access to the internet and electronic devices. The threats and the complaints of cyberbullying have also increased.

Due to children’s mistakes, their parent’s private data is also leaked. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines child maltreatment as “all forms of physical and emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation that results in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, development or dignity.”

A program that includes awareness camps about child abuse, Good touch- Bad touch, Assertive training (Assertive enough to say “No” to any form of abuse), etc., can help prevent child abuse.

This time again, Techniche was back with the Guwahati Half Marathon, an initiative to spread awareness amongst the masses for child protection and child abuse prevention. With a footfall of over 1500, participants ran with the motive of securing a bright future standing with the moto #youth4suraksha and team Techniche.

The latest edition of the Guwahati Half Marathon happened on 24th April 2022. The main title sponsors are UNICEF, ROTARY CLUB North India, and IREDA
